Press release 27/2019 16.09.2019

It was a great weekend for the Autorlando-Sport team, which engaged on three fronts took important results on the track front with 2nd place in the Italian GT Championship at Vallelunga with the trio Ghezzi-Chiesa-Babini winning first place in the drivers’ standings, and the two podiums (2nd and 3rd place) for Maurizio Fondi in the Supercars Series with the 997 GT3-R. On the Rally side, instead, a bitter withdrawal for the Fratti-Verna couple who during the PS5 on Sunday morning must abandon the race and 1st place in the ranking.

At Vallelunga in the 3rd Round of the Italian EGT Babini which replaced the future father Camathias by an excellent contribution to the development of the car during the three free practice sessions scheduled in the program while Ghezzi and Chiesa put to good use what they had learned after the round of the SPRINT championship in May. The qualifications start at 3.20pm on Saturday with Giuseppe Ghezzi facing the first stint, followed by Riccardo Chiesa and finally by Fabio Babini, who put the hard work of the team to good use and get the second position in the category, a few cents from the Team BMW, author of the Pole class.

The first stint after the green shot at 2.30pm on Sunday sees Ghezzi slipping into 5th position and hindered recovery even due to the intense fight between the GT3s. The second stint sees Chiesa in a clear recovery over the adversaries, gaining progressively ground until the next driver change at the end of the second hour of the race, where the team, ably exploiting the sudden entry of the Safety Car, brings the car back to the top of the class. The rhythm of Babini is superb and the march towards a class victory now seems a formality but a sudden puncture complicates everything. Quick in the pit stop the team send back to the track the car that will close second in class. Regret there is but the good news is that the Ghezzi and Chiesa drivers climb to the top of the drivers’ standings having put behind the direct rivals of BMW with whom they shared the first place in the standings at the beginning of the weekend.

At Vallelunga in the Supercars Series Fondi also returned to the track after Imola round on one of his favorite cars, the 997 GT3-R, which allows him to achieve excellent results in free practice and second place in Friday’s qualifying behind only to the Corvette GT3 of Del Castello. On Saturday at 13.10, Race 1 starts, confirming the same positions on arrival after a battle that saw Fondi immediately gain the first position and keep it “with the teeth” for several laps. Sunday in Race 2 the starting grid is the same as in Race 1 and in the first few laps Fondi battled with the Corvette of Del Castello and the Lamborghini of Strignano. The intervention of the Safety Car mixes the cards in play and the race ends with Fondi in third position behind Del Castello and Strignano, closing a very positive weekend for the Team and Maurizio himself satisfied with the results obtained.

The bitter note of the weekend comes from the rally front where the Fratti-Verna couple had to abandon the event in the middle of the PS5 on Sunday morning, “MOSSINI-BERBENNO 1” when it was at the top of the list of historic cars. On Saturday he saw the crew develop the car in the morning SHAKEDOWN and then win three of four PS, finishing second only in the PS3, the first night pass of the rally, for just one second. In the special “MELLO 1”, “ALBOSAGGIA 1” and “ALBOSAGGIA 2” Fratti and Verna have always conquered the absolute first place among the historical ones and consequently of class arriving at the reorganization of Saturday evening at the top of the ranking. On Sunday we start again but during the first test of the day we have the unexpected gearbox failure forces the couple to retire bitterly from the event. One thing is certain, at the next Rally Due Valli Fratti, which for the occasion will have as its navigator Frigerio will certainly want to do best.

The weekend closes here and Autorlando-Sport is giving you an appointment at Monza this weekend where the CER will stop and see Fratti-Cabianca racing with the 934 Jagermeister in CER 2 giving the assault in first place in the standings and again Fratti deploy the 996 RSR in the Endurance Racing Legend.
